LentSpace was a temporary park located at Canal Street between Sixth Avenue and Hudson Street in Manhattan. This unique site had a temporary hold while the owner waited for a zoning change. In the meantime, the site was used as a park, tree nursery, and featured a significant contemporary art program.
We developed a graphic identity for the park based on the unique geometry of the site— a bisected parallelogram. This logo was used across the image program, but also in a free publication that accompanied the multiple group shows that included work by Olivier Babin, Olga Chernysheva, Eli Hansen & Oscar Tuazon, Graham Hudson, Tobias Putrih, Ryan Taber, and Corban Walker.
A significant aspect of the project was a repositionable wall that allowed the site to be opened and closed on a daily basis. We developed a 238 foot long panel of aluminum discs (over 13,000 of them) that indicated portions of the fence that were operable. In addition to providing a visual cue, the discs when blown by the wind generated a jingling tone that subdued the traffic noise on the site.
